How does the secret code work?

When you submit a question, our server generates a 12-character high-entropy secret code (format: ask-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx). Your browser displays this code once. On the server, only a cryptographic salted SHA-256 hash is kept—the raw code is never stored in our database. Only someone possessing the exact code can access the answer.

How do I find my answer later?

Simply visit the Check Answer page, enter your secret code, and submit. If a contributor or moderator has reviewed and answered your question, you will see their response immediately. You can check back as often as you wish.

What happens if I lose my secret code?

Accepted Answer

Because we intentionally store zero personal information, email addresses, or phone numbers, we have no technical way to link a lost code to you. If you lose your secret code, your question cannot be recovered. We recommend copying or securely bookmarking your code upon submission.

Can someone else see my question?

No. Anonymous questions and answers are strictly private. They are never published on public feeds, never made indexable by search engines, and can only be decrypted and viewed by someone submitting your specific secret code.

Can I delete my question?

Yes. In adherence to your Right to Be Forgotten, you can delete your question and any associated responses at any time by entering your secret code and confirming deletion. Once confirmed, the record and hash are permanently removed from the database.
